What is Neurographic Art

As I explore art of all kinds, I stumbled upon something called “Neurographic Art”. This peaked my interest because it sounded both sciencey and artsy.

Here is a quick and dirty definition:

Neurographic art is a form of creative expression that combines art and psychology. It involves creating intricate patterns and designs using continuous lines to explore and express emotions, thoughts, and inner experiences.

This art form is believed to have therapeutic benefits and is often used as a tool for relaxation, self-discovery, and stress relief.

Neurographic art encourages free-flowing, non-judgmental creativity, and can be a powerful method for individuals to connect with their subconscious and express their inner world visually.

Rules of Neurographic Art

There are a few types of neurographic art, some being more “official” than others.

The primary rule for all of them is that there should be no sharp corners; all intersecting lines must be rounded off.

Basic Steps in Making Neurographic Art

  • Use a pen/pencil/marker to create scribbles on a piece of paper.
  • Find the intersecting lines and “round off” the sharp corners.
  • Colour or embellish how you like.

There are many different varieties of neurographic art and some people like to consider themselves purists. This just means that they don’t want to deviate from the original premise and procedure. Some of the critical elements for purists include:

  • Think of an intention or question as you draw the initial lines.
  • Neurographic lines do not repeat, or end in the middle of the page.
  • Neurographic lines are not straight, or curvy. They are generally wiggly.

For regular Joes like myself, I have no problem singing to my own tune once the rounding off step is done. You will see that my lines are generally curvy, I add lots of colour, and sometimes my lines end in the middle of the page. A lot of times, mine end up looking like actual rocks etc. To each there own.

The lesson here is that neurographic art is meant to be relaxing and zen-like. Make it happen however you like.

If you have never tried neurographic art, I encourage you to go for it.
